This page describes the Porirua Library Reference Collections which hold a wide range of resources for study and research.
The main Reference Collection is located next to the Maori Reference area. There is also a Quick Reference Collection, next to the public photocopier. Space is available within the library for study and you may bring in your own laptop computers. The library also has free access to WellyWiFi.
Encyclopedias: Britannica is available via the online catalogues, as is Te Ara Encyclopedia.
Dictionaries: There are some English dictionaries and thesauri in the main Reference Collection; others are located on the Quick Reference shelves, along with subject dictionaries.

Medical books: A good range of dictionaries and encyclopaedias is available. There are also some books on prescription drugs, cancer, and mental health. It is recommended to use the Gale Health and Wellness Center via the online catalogues for in-depth information on diseases that are not covered in the lending collection.
Standards: The library holds only NZS 3604:2011, the New Zealand Standard for Timber-framed buildings. It is held at the Issues Desk.
Fiction guides: These include the "Who else writes like?" books (also available online) and "What do I read next?", held on the Quick Reference shelves.
Atlases: Atlases are generally held in the Atlas Cabinet but New Zealand maps and atlases are shelved in Quick Reference. Atlases cover a range of subjects, not just general world maps
Electoral rolls: Current electoral rolls are held in the reference area, shelved behind the Quick Reference collection. The Library's Genealogy Research Centre holds a selection of electoral rolls on microfiche from 1865 to 1963 and also most of the Porirua rolls for the last 30 years.
Online catalogues: There are five computers in the Reference area that access selected websites via the Digital Library. These include New Zealand statutes, or current laws, the full text of journal and newspaper articles, WorldCat (a world-wide catalogue of libraries), New Zealand government websites and two funding databases.
Motor manuals: The library holds a good selection of motor manuals for cars, motorbikes and outboard motors. These cannot be borrowed but you can photocopy three pages for free.
Quick Reference: These shelves, which are next to the public photocopier, contain Consumer magazines, subject dictionaries, books on New Zealand law, The Dictionary of New Zealand biography, fiction guides and New Zealand maps.
