Check out the amazing events that happened at A-Long Hot Summer Story Festival – which ran from 20 December to 17 January.

It was a scorcher of a year and A-Long Hot Summer Story Festival had a sizzler of a programme for book lovers and crafty kids.

The festival launched in hilarious style on 20 December at the City Centre Library with Chris Lam Sam’s riotous Musical Mayhem show.

The festival was held at the City Centre, Cannons Creek, Whitby and Pukerua Bay libraries from 20 December to 17 January, with more than 20 events on offer – all free!

Tamariki from around the region attended events for guaranteed good times, collected attendance stamps – and mystery goodie bags – and were in to win spot prizes!

Some stats

A total of 1,122 people partook in the 22 shows on offer. The biggest crowds came for Zappo the Magician at City Centre, and master storyteller Stu Duval at Whitby Library.

We gave away 236 mystery goodie bags, for repeat attendance – with many kids coming to up to eight shows – and for spotting the boat sheds hidden at all our branch libraries.

We gave away 470 books (print and audio), thanks to generous sponsorship from Gecko Press, Book Island, Bolinda, and Wheelers. Ten families won spot prize passes to Zealandia. That’s not to mention all the Whittaker’s chocolate, badges, bookmarks, postcards, chalk-packs, pencils, and posters children received, or the cloth bags made at the two Zero Waste workshops.
