Fines Free at Porirua Libraries
Porirua City Council voted to remove overdue fines from 1 July 2023. Existing fines will also be waived at this point. Porirua libraries are scrapping overdue fines, in a move to remove barriers and make libraries more welcoming and accessible for all.
What happens if a library item is lost or not returned?
First, get in touch with us! We want you to be able to use the library and can offer two renewals if the title doesn’t have a waiting list.
- If you have an item more than 3 weeks overdue, your library privileges will be suspended. This means you won’t be able to borrow, reserve, or use our eResources (like Libby) until items are returned.
- Items will be considered lost if they are 6 weeks overdue and you will be charged the replacement cost. Library privileges will be suspended until lost items are either paid for or returned. Lost charges are removed if the item is returned.
- From 1 July 2023, we can no longer offer refunds for lost items that have already been paid for.
Can I still renew my library items?
- Items which are overdue can not be renewed.
- Please contact the library on 042371533 to request an extension if you wish to have more time to find lost items.
Will the timeframe for reminders change?
- Reminders are sent to the contacts listed in your library account.
- A loan reminder will be sent 3 to 5 days before the item is due for return.
- Overdue reminders will be sent once the date is past the return date.
- Long overdue reminders will be sent 21 days after the return date and your account will be locked.
- Lost item invoices will be sent 42 days after the return date and you will be invoiced for the cost of the item(s).
